Looking Back – Looking Forward: Calm and Insight in the Buddhist Tradition

This talk will be a continuation of a talk given in November 2018. Looking back on the great Vipassana traditions and teachers can provide us with inspiration and confidence as we go forward in our own practice. There are many Vipassana traditions. The two most commonly known (Goenka & Mahasi) were discussed previously. In this talk a couple of other traditions will be explored such as the Mogok Tradition. Perhaps the most popular of all in Burma.

Suitable for both beginners and those with meditation experience.

Four of this, Eight of that, Five of this, Seven of that: The Buddhas path to mental wellness.

A four-week course.

In our everyday life we often find that there is mental agitation, upheaval and conflict. To come out of this, the Buddha advised that we try our best to walk the path that he discovered under the Bodhi Tree. He offered advice and encouragement for us to achieve our goal of mental wellness. In this course each night will be devoted to a brief exploration of one of the many useful practices given by the Buddha. We will discuss in meditative terms;

  • The four foundations of mindfulness,
  • The noble eight-fold path,
  • The five powers and,
  • The seven factors of enlightenment

The night will begin with a half hour sitting practice period, followed by a talk. After a five-minute break at 8pm, there will be an interview session, another sitting and a Q&A session.

Dates: Friday April 6th, 13th & 27th & May 4th 2018

Time: 7:00pm - 9pm

Venue: Buddhist Library, 90-92 Church St Camperdown (Syd) 2050
